54-DAY ROSARY NOVENA (AUGUST 15 - OCTOBER 7, 2018)
Please join in praying a Novena for Our Nation as an Act of Reparation; calling upon God through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary to heal our country and return it to holiness. The 54 day Novena will take place from August 15 through October 7, 2018, with a Rosary Coast to Coast set to take place on October 7, 2018. The Rosary Coast to Coast is scheduled to take place at 4 pm ET, 3 pm CT, 2 pm MT and 1 pm PT, to avoid conflict with Sunday Masses.

PRAYER INTENTION CARD MAILING FROM THE BISHOP
The fifth annual “Prayer Intention Card” mailing from the Bishop’s Office was sent in mid-June to all registered households. Helping to fulfill one of his primary obligations, to pray for the people of the Diocese of Marquette, Bishop John Doerfler invites parishioners to send personal prayer requests. Returned prayer cards are kept in his private chapel, where he will pray for the intentions for the next year. Please encourage your parishioners to respond. RISE 30-DAY CHALLENGE
The RISE 30-day challenge for men helps form groups of men who are dedicated to becoming faithful sons, brothers, spouses, and fathers. Creators of RISE are giving the RISE challenge program information away free to all priests, seminarians and religious. There are specific challenges for men of all stages in life. There are also challenge for priests, seminarians and religious. Bishop John encourages you to spread the word about this initiative. WEEKLY MOMENT OF PRAYER-LEGAL PROTECTION OF HUMAN LIFE
Each Friday, from August 3 to September 28, 2019, we’ll have the opportunity to join in a nine-week effort of prayer, fasting and education that a change in the U.S. Supreme Court will move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcomed in life.

BARAGA DAYS 2018
Baraga Days 2018 will take place in Marquette, MI on Saturday, August 18, 2018 and Sunday, August 19, 2018. On Saturday, events will begin at St. Peter Cathedral with Mass followed by morning events including the showing of the documentary entitled: They Might Be Saints: Bishop Frederic Baraga. A ticketed lunch and afternoon events will take place at St. Louis the King with a Native American Drum Circle and teaching. At 3pm EST Most Rev. John F. Doerfler will conduct a blessing at the Bishop Baraga Educational Center. The day will conclude at St. Peter Cathedral with a Slovenian Mass at 6pm EST followed by a ticketed dinner. On Sunday, there will be a ticketed breakfast from 7-9am at St. Peter Cathedral in the parish hall followed by the Annual Bishop Baraga Association meeting from 9-10am. ANNUAL CARMELITE SILVER TEA - SEPTEMBER 15TH & 16TH, 2018
The annual fundraiser to benefit the Carmelite Sisters will be held at the Carmelite Monastery in Iron Mountain, MI on Sept. 15th and 16th from noon to 3pm. The Silver Tea is a 65 year old tradition, and is the only organized fundraiser held throughout the year. The Sisters rely solely on alms (donations) for their support! Craft and bake sale items along with the Sisters famous homemade bread will be available for sale. The Silver Tea table will include sandwiches, candies, bars, coffee and tea. The tea is open to the public and all are welcome.

NEED FOR SAFE ENVIRONMENT FACILITATOR IN SAULT STE. MARIE
The Diocese of Marquette is in search of someone to be trained as a Safe Environment Facilitator in the Sault Ste. Marie area. You will be thoroughly trained in all requirements including facilitating and recordkeeping of the Protecting God’s Children classroom session, which you will teach twice a year. 2018 PROTECTING GOD'S CHILDREN CLASS SCHEDULE
The 2018 Protecting God’s Children class schedule is available. Refer to Addendum #1 for the 2018 Protecting God’s Children Classroom Schedule. Participants must pre-register in order to attend a class. Refer to Addendum #2 for Pre-Registering for a PGC Classroom Training Session. Once training is completed, instructions on the background check will be distributed to the participants. Training and a complete background check must be complete prior to employment or volunteering in any parish or school in the Diocese of Marquette. This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 16, 2018. The 2018 theme will be "Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. FALL EVANGELIZATION WORKSHOPS
As called for in Bishop John’s pastoral letter, Transforming Fire, the Department of Evangelization & Education will be offering the Fall Evangelization Workshops in each vicariate. The focus this year is on fostering a personal encounter with Jesus and deepening a life of prayer. The workshops will assist pastors and their teams to gain a better understanding of a personal encounter with Jesus. There will also be time to share parish best practices in these areas.

51ST UPCSA "FIRST ASK" LETTER
Bishop Doerfler will again send a direct mailing to all registered households in early September to kick off the UP Catholic Services Appeal. Like previous years, the “first ask” mailing will include a personalized cover letter from the Bishop, a “Gifts at Work” newsletter and a personalized pledge card and reply envelope for parishioners to return to their parish. The “second ask” message from individual pastors will be completed during UPCSA Weekend (September 29/30, 2018) and the “third ask” mailing will be distributed by December 17th, 2018.
NATIONAL CHURCH COMBINED COLLECTION - AUGUST 11/12TH, 2018
All parishes in the Diocese of Marquette will be taking up the 2018 National Church Collection on August 11/12th, 2018. The National Church Collection supports the following outreach ministries to the Universal Church: the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the National Retirement Fund for Religious, and the Catholic University Collection. Parish bookkeepers are advised to divide unspecified National Church fund donations evenly between the three individual collections using the Collection Counting Sheet. Bookkeepers may then complete their Combined Collection Transmittal forms to include with their payment to the Diocese. These collection resources can be found at dioceseofmarquette.org/administrativepolicies. Please make checks out to “Diocese of Marquette-National Church Collection.”
Please see the Bulletin Announcements section for an announcement that can be placed in your parish bulletins to promote this collection. Parishes may also print and use Addendum #3 - National Church Collection flyer as an optional bulletin insert. Thank you for your attention to this very important matter.
STANDARDIZED PERSONNEL POLICIES - EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2018
Bishop Doerfler decreed that all employees of the Diocese, parishes and cemeteries, Bishop Baraga Association, and Marygrove Retreat Center must adopt the Standardized Personnel Policies (see Addendum #4) by July 1, 2018. The Diocese has additionally clarified that all above mentioned entities must adopt the main body of these Standardized Personnel Policies effective July 1, 2018 and adopt individual supplemental policies by September 1, 2018.
A copy of the supplemental personnel policies was emailed to all parishes and missions on June 8th, 2018 and can be found in Addendum #5. A draft of these supplemental policies must be submitted to the Diocese before being implemented by each individual parish. Please submit final supplemental policy drafts to Irene McCauley at firstname.lastname@example.org for Diocesan review.
Once supplemental policies are approved by the Diocese, copies will be returned to the parish and must be signed by the pastor and parish finance council to take effect. All parish employees must also sign policy acknowledgement forms that may be recorded in employee personnel files.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development
Over 43 million people in the United States live in poverty. This collection supports programs to empower people to identify and address the obstacles they face as they work to bring the permanent and positive change to their communities. In addition, 25 percent of funds collection remain in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects.
