Sacred Heart School eyes future with openness, Christian love, respect for all 1/15/2010 By Victoria LaFave The Sacred Heart School Commission, along with Principal Anne Schumer and Pastor Father John Longbucco, are looking to the future of Sacred Heart School (SHS). A strategic planning meeting was held on Nov. 19, 2009 with area residents who were interested in keeping SHS as an integral part of the Baraga County community invited to attend. Attendees included parents, parishioners, the entire staff at SHS, alumni, students, past teachers and school board members, along with community leaders, who shared their ideas and concerns as they joined in planning for the future of the school. “Everyone who attended this strategic planning meeting helped in their own way to make a difference in the community by keeping this Catholic Christian school alive, and by becoming a part of its bright future,” Schumer said. Father Longbucco communicated at the meeting that he sees a bright future for Sacred Heart School. The guidance he was given by Bishop Alexander K. Sample was simple and clear. Bishop Sample said, “Convince the people of the parish and the community that they have a diamond in the rough.” Father Longbucco wants other Christian communities to know that Sacred Heart School provides an environment of Christian love and respect and is open to children of all denominations. He, along with the SHS staff and school commission, can see the potential for other Christian churches to bring in their own Sunday school teachers to teach their faith and doctrine at SHS if not wishing their students to receive Catholic religious instruction. Illustrating the dedication of the families at Sacred Heart School, Schumer noted one family that shows its commitment daily to providing their child with a Catholic education. The Wuori family began the school year driving nearly one hour every day from Hancock to L’Anse to send their son, Peyton, who is now in 2nd grade, to Sacred Heart School. (Within a month into the school year, the family found it easier to rent an apartment in L’Anse to avoid the long commute.) Peyton's mom, Lori, said of her and her husband Fred's decision to have their son attend Sacred Heart: "Our Catholic faith brought us to Sacred Heart School in L'Anse, a commute of one hundred miles daily from our home in Hancock. Our son, Peyton, opened our eyes to see the Lord when he said these simple words: ‘I want to go to school where they pray the rosary’...and our thoughts were, ‘Thank you God!’ If our son is in school for seven hours a day, five days a week, we want him in a place where God comes first.” This commitment to a Catholic education is what makes SHS families special, according to Schumer. “Not only do we have many families that are committed to providing a Catholic education to their children,” Schumer said, “but our staff is also extremely dedicated to our school’s mission as well.” Sacred Heart School, 433 Baraga Ave, L’Anse, has students in pre-school through 6th grade, and is the Keweenaw Peninsula’s only Catholic school. Call Schumer for more information on the school at (906) 524-5157. End.
