Father Marquette Elementary and Middle Schools offer Lego Robotics program 1/15/2010 By Victoria LaFave On certain days of the week, it wouldn’t be unlikely to find priests teaching students at Father Marquette School about subjects such as morality, sacraments, and robots. Yes, robots. The school is now offering an after-school Lego robotics class. According to Jackie Wright, principal of Father Marquette Elementary School and Middle School (since the retirement of Karen Ogles, who recently retired as principal of the Middle School), Father Ben Hasse and Father Tim Ekaitis are two young priests who coordinate and coach the Lego Robotics Program, an after-school program for Father Marquette Middle School students in 5th through 8th grades. Illustrating the dedication these priests have for students at Father Marquette Elementary School, Wright noted that the priests teach a variety of subjects, which greatly benefit the students. “The priests give so much of themselves to our students,” Wright said. Along with teaching robotics to students after school, the priests recently worked with the 7th graders teaching the sacraments. And last semester, they taught morality to the 8th graders. “It’s incredible the impact these priests have on our students, both vocation-wise and in seeing good young men,” Wright said. “They are such role models for the kids. Students can really relate to them, and may say, ‘If Father Tim or Father Ben can do that, I can too.’” According to Wright, even the younger kids get some time with the priests. “All the kids love to be with the priests. “Father Tim even sits with all the students at all three lunch periods at least once a week, and then goes outside and plays with them,” Wright noted. “He’s not just a figurehead; he’s their friend. And the kids love them.” For more information on Father Marquette Schools, please call Wright at (906) 225-1129, Ext. 2. Father Marquette Elementary School is located at 500 S. Fourth Street, and the Middle School is located at 414 W. College, Marquette. End.
