YEAR OF FAITH – 2ND MOMENT

In consultation with the Diocesan Council for Promoting the New Evangelization, the diocese is planning the activities for the second “moment,” or phase, of the Year of Faith, which will run from Christmas to the Sacred Paschal Triduum. Please see Addendum #1 for a letter from Bishop Sample to help parishes and missions prepare for this upcoming moment.

MODERATOR OF THE CURIA

AND MINISTRY PERSONNEL SERVICES

Reverend Ronald T. Browne

SECOND MOMENT OF THE YEAR OF FAITH

We will soon begin the second “moment” of the Year of Faith, which will run from Christmas to the Sacred Paschal Triduum.  As stated in Bishop Sample’s pastoral letter, “We Wish to See Jesus,” this phase corresponds to the Liturgy of the Word in the Holy Mass and focuses on the Word of God as contained in Sacred Scripture.  Bishop Sample is asking all parishes and missions to conduct a ritual for the blessing of Bibles that families will bring to Masses the weekend of December 29 and 30, the Feast of the Holy Family. Families will then be asked to “enthrone” the Bible in a prominent place in their home and read Sacred Scripture, namely the Gospel of Luke, together weekly.  Sample bulletin and pulpit announcements regarding this second phase can be found in Addendum #2 and Addendum #3.  The bulletin announcement can be published as desired; the pulpit announcement should be read at the Masses on the Fourth Sunday of Advent, on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day.  In the coming weeks the parishes will be provided with the ritual to bless the Bibles in church, the ritual of “enthronement” at home, and the weekly reading plan.   An ancillary reading plan will also be provided for those individuals or families who wish to delve more deeply into Sacred Scripture.

In addition, Bishop Sample is asking parishes to play the CD he has recorded regarding the second “moment” of the Year of Faith at Masses the weekend of Dec. 22/23.  The CD could also be played a second time at Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses, if desired, as an outreach to Catholics in attendance for the holyday.  One option would be to play the CD following the pulpit announcement.  The CD, which is two-and-a-half minutes long, will be distributed to clergy in attendance at Deacon Marty Flynn’s ordination on December 14 and through the mail.  The script is included as Addendum #4.

DIOCESAN PASTORAL COUNCIL
