PRAYER FOR THE SYNOD ON THE FAMILY
Bishop John welcomes you to use the following prayer for the Synod on the Family:
Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
In you we contemplate
The splendor of true love,
We turn to you with confidence.
Holy Family of Nazareth,
Make our families, also,
Places of communion and cenacles of prayer,
Authentic schools of the Gospel,
And little domestic Churches.
Holy Family of Nazareth
May our families never more experience
Violence, isolation, and division:
May anyone who was wounded or scandalized
Rapidly experience consolation and healing.
Holy Family of Nazareth,
May the upcoming Synod of Bishops
Re-awaken in all an awareness
Of the sacred character and inviolability of the family,
Its beauty in the project of God.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
Hear and answer our prayer. Amen.

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL COLLECTION (CHMA), APRIL 26, 2015
THE WEEK BEFORE THE APPEAL (BULLETIN ROOM PERMITTING)
The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place the weekend of April 26th. One way that this appeal works to strengthen home mission dioceses in the United States is by funding seminarian formation in poor dioceses. The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on these dioceses, where educating each seminarian costs $35-40K per year. Your support is needed for these young men so that they might go back and serve their parishes. Please strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to next week’s appeal.
THE WEEK OF THE APPEAL
Many dioceses right here in the United States do not have enough priests and trained lay ministers to serve their parishes. These dioceses are known as home missions. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place this weekend in the second collection, and supports these dioceses by funding essential ministries, including seminary education and lay ministry training. Please be generous in this appeal and share your resources to strengthen the Church at home.
THE WEEK AFTER THE APPEAL
Thank you for your generous support of last week’s Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Your contributions will help strengthen the Church at home and will help ensure that the Gospel is spread across the United States. To learn more about home missions funding and who the appeal helps, please visit www.usccb.org and search “Catholic Home Missions.”
MARQUETTE DIOCESAN PRIESTS’ RETIREMENT COLLECTION, APRIL 26, 2015
THE WEEK BEFORE THE COLLECTION (BULLETIN ROOM PERMITTING)
The Diocese of Marquette is blessed with many senior priests (those who are no longer assigned to a parish). These men make present Christ, the Good Shepherd, not only in what they do, but in who they are. Many of them continue to give of themselves in countless ways of service for which we are grateful.
During his years of priestly ministry, a diocesan priest is supported mainly by a parish community. The retirement years can be difficult for these men who may dedicate as many as 50 years or more of their lives to caring for and ministering to others. No longer supported by their parish communities, some rely on minimal Social Security benefits and their pension from the St. Joseph Association, the diocesan priest retirement fund.
On the Fourth Sunday of Easter, April 26th weekend, all parishes and missions in the diocese will take up a special collection to support our priests’ retirement fund.
THE WEEK OF THE COLLECTION
Retired priests of the Diocese of Marquette receive health insurance benefits, automobile insurance and a monthly pension from the St. Joseph Association, the diocesan priest retirement fund. Diocesan priests live independently during their retirement, and they use their pension for basic needs, such as food, housing and transportation.
Parishes are assessed an annual amount per priest serving at the parish. These assessments, plus other growth in the St. Joseph Association, have fallen short of what is needed to provide necessary benefits to our priests. With a large number of priests nearing retirement, and skyrocketing costs for medical services, prescription drugs, long-term care and gaps in Medicare coverage, there is a pressing need to provide necessary benefits to our priests.
All parishes and missions in the Diocese of Marquette will participate in a special collection the weekend of April 26th to help bridge the gap. It is essential that we ensure adequate retirement and health coverage in the years ahead for our priests. Please return your collection envelope during next weekends’ Masses.
THE WEEK AFTER THE COLLECTION
Last weekend, our parish and all parishes and missions throughout our diocese took up a special collection to support our priests’ retirement fund, called the St. Joseph Association. The St. Joseph Association, pays the monthly pension, health and auto insurance for retired priests of the diocese. Thank you for your support of our retired priests.
