DECLARATIONS OF NULLITY PROCESSING FEES WAIVED

In a gesture of solidarity and love to persons who are divorced and remarried or plan to remarry, I have decided to waive all fees for processing declarations of nullity of marriages from this point forward in the Diocese of Marquette.  I have issued a pastoral message on this topic and recorded a video of it, which will be posted to my webpage on the diocesan website www.dioceseofmarquette.org/bishop and to our YouTube channel www.youtube.com/theupcatholic by this Friday.  An article about my pastoral message and the message itself will be published in the January 16 issue of The U.P. Catholic.  A suggested bulletin announcement is included in this issue of the Diocesan Communicator for your use if you find it helpful.

In order to initiate an annulment, please refer to the following link to download the application form:

2016 COLLECTIONS SCHEDULE
The 2016 Collection Schedule is attached as Addendum #1.   We are aware that two collections fall on the same weekend; this is occurring because of the date on which Easter falls in 2016.

“9 DAYS FOR LIFE”
As we approach the observance of the 42nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, I encourage each of you to pray for a greater respect for the dignity of human life.  In a particular way, I invite you and your parishioners to participate in 9 Days for Life, a 9-day period of prayer, penance and pilgrimage from January 17-25, 2015.

A simple novena is available with different prayer intentions, brief reflections, suggested acts of reparation, and recommended reading for each day. The intentions this year include various topics within the spectrum of human life issues, ranging from prayers for an end to abortion, domestic violence and the death penalty to an intention for the welcoming of children into adoptive families.

People may subscribe to receive the novena by text message, email, or an app (smart phone application), or download a printable version which will be made available online.

Many other helpful promotional, programmatic and prayer resources, are available at www.9daysforlife.com.

EVANGELIZATION TRAINING

Evangelization is a mission of every baptized Catholic; whether at home, at work, or abroad, we must “open our mouths” and share God’s love for us.  No one needs to be perfect in order to carry out this mission and to encourage every Catholic on this task and on how to get it done, Evangelization Training is available.  See Addendum # 2.

COLLECTION FOR THE U.P. CATHOLIC NEWSPAPER

 (optional collection)

Please be advised that the collection for The U.P. Catholic newspaper will be held during the weekend of February 7/8, 2015. This is an optional collection that assists the parishes in providing the diocesan newspaper to their registered parishioners.  Although you are free to retain the proceeds of this collection, the newspaper staff would appreciate it if you would send a check for this collection to the diocese so that we could evaluate its effectiveness.  If you do this, the diocese will credit your parish's U.P. Catholic subscription account.  Please refer to the Bulletin Announcements section for an announcement for publication in your parish bulletins the weekend of January 31-February 1 that can be used even if your parish does not take up the optional collection.

Marty Flynn, Deacon Steve and Jackie Gretzinger will speak on what it means to be consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  They will also be addressing how this can be lived out in our parishes, families and marriages.

HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM RESOURCE CORRELATIONS

Just a reminder that in an effort to assist parishes with their high school programs, correlations of Dynamic Catholic’s Decision Point and Ascension Press’ Chosen to the high school curriculum have been completed.  They have been posted to the diocesan website under: Catholic Living/High School Curriculum.

If you have any questions or need more information regarding either of these programs for use with your high school youth please contact Denise Foye at dfoye@dioceseofmarquette.org. or 906-227-9130.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT

All parishes/missions and schools must have a Local Site Administrator (LSA) appointed by the pastor, to monitor your roster of employees and volunteers.  This will eliminate the need to contact the diocese to see if a person is in compliance with Safe Environment training.  For pastors to appoint an LSA CLICK HERE.

SEMINARIAN ENDOWMENT CHALLENGE

The national fundraising organization Catholic Extension has approved the Diocese of Marquette to participate in its 2015 Seminarian Endowment Challenge. For every qualifying $2 the Diocese raises toward its seminarian endowment this year, Catholic Extension will match $1, up to $50,000. Qualifying donations must be new, or increased, gifts of $1,000 or more, or else money raised through special fundraising events designated for the program. In order to qualify for the challenge, all funds must be received in cash or readily marketable securities before December 31, 2015.

This initiative helps us to grow a permanent seminarian endowment that will help manage increasing costs over the long term without coming at the expense of current programs or ministries. It also provides incentive for our diocese to create and develop a major gift program by offering a matching grant for endowment fundraising efforts for seminarian education.

Visit www.dioceseofmarquette.org to make your online gift in support of seminarian education. For more information, contact Terri Gadzinski at tgadzinski@dioceseofmarquette.org or the new diocesan director of vocations, Rev. Ben Hasse, at benjhasse@yahoo.com.

WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR UPCSA RESULTS NEXT YEAR?

The development office is seeking 3 or 4 pilot parishes and pastors who are open to trying a new approach to how they conduct the next UPCSA. Working with a small guiding coalition of dedicated and mission-driven priests and deacons, we will interview your parish leadership to better understand how the campaign is usually conducted at your parish, and offer strategies to improve campaign results. Customized guidance and leadership support will be offered throughout the planning, solicitation and post campaign stages. We especially invite parishes that typically fall short of their goal, but will consider others who are open to trying something new. Contact Terri Gadzinski at 1/800/562-9745 ext. #108 or tgadzinski@dioceseofmarquette.org.

 BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENTS

BISHOP TO WAIVE ANNULMENT PROCESSING FEES

Bishop John Doerfler recently issued a pastoral message called “Reconciliation and Healing: A Pastoral Message on Declarations of Nullity.”  In his pastoral message, he states, “From this point forward, all fees for processing declarations of nullity of marriages (otherwise known as annulments) are waived in the Diocese of Marquette. The faithful may benefit from the healing and reconciliation of this ministry free of charge. I offer this gesture to extend a hand of solidarity and love to persons who are divorced and remarried or plan to remarry. In doing so, I also wish to thank those who support the ministry of the Diocese of Marquette. Your generous donations to the Upper Peninsula Catholic Services Appeal make this gesture of healing and reconciliation possible.”  Written and/or video versions of Bishop John’s pastoral message can be accessed on the Internet at: www.dioceseofmarquette.org/bishop and:  www.youtube.com/theupcatholic.  For more information, please contact your parish priest.

COLLECTION FOR THE U.P. CATHOLIC NEWSPAPER

(optional collection)
(For publication Jan. 31/Feb. 1, 2015)
As Catholic publications throughout the country celebrate Catholic Press Month in February, here are some interesting facts about your diocesan newspaper. The U.P. Catholic is mailed to over 18,600 Catholic households in the Diocese of Marquette and beyond.  In 2014, The U.P. Catholic was recognized with an award from the Catholic Press Association, receiving an Honorable Mention in the Best Regular Column – Culture, the Arts and Leisure category for Jim LaJoie’s “From the Sidelines” column.  This column was up against publications of every size, including national newspapers.  The U.P. Catholic is supported by several sources of revenue:  a parish subscription fee that amounts to $4.25/registered household/year, a diocesan subsidy, subscription fees from readers that are not affiliated with a U.P. parish, advertising, a portion of the national Catholic Communication Campaign collection taken up on Good Friday, and a grant from the national Catholic Home Missions Appeal collection taken up in April.  You can help your parish with its subscription expense by placing a donation in The U.P. Catholic envelope provided in your parish packet if your parish takes up the optional collection for the diocesan newspaper on Feb. 7-8. If you don’t have a parish envelope for this purpose, you can still help your parish out by placing a contribution in your own envelope with The U.P. Catholic written on it and putting the envelope in the collection basket or giving it to your parish office. Happy Catholic Press Month!
